DIVISION ESSAY- FIRST DRAFT

THE CHANGES IN CLOTHING AND STYLE

The clothing and style of people are changing day by day. In this changing, periods and movements play an important role. When we look the recent past, many currents and their effects can be seen clearly. Therefore, in term of these movements period, clothing and style can be viewed in three different times and these are the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.

First, we can see the current and their effects on people’s clothing and style in the 1970s. Toward the end of the 1960s, the young started a movement against the system, consumption and people who were called hippies were revealed. They were the children of love and freedom. They had a motto and it was “Make love not war.” In addition to this, the youth of this movement created their own unique style of dressing. Colourful clothes, large floral patterns were the main clothing. As well as long skirts, boots, and dresses were widely used.

Second, we can see the movement and their effects on people’s clothing and style in the 1980s. In the 80s, women began to work in managerial positions in business. In order to appear stronger than they were, they started to choose more masculine clothes. To show shoulders broad, they preferred to big shoulder pads and short hair. On the other hand, youth were in another world. Due to the Disco Era, young people started to wear clothes in bright, fluorescent colours. They tried to emulate Madonna and Michael Jackson.

Finally, we can see the differences and their effects on people’s clothing in 1990s. In these years, anew trend which was called “Grunge” started to spread. Young people gave up on brightly coloured clothes and began to wear relax and shabby clothes. The clothes which they wore were military boots, sweaters, plaid shirts, and ample jeans. Additionally, there were also changes in women’s clothing. Most of them began to appear more feminine. As a result of their self-esteem, there was an increase in formfitting clothes.

In conclusion, the periods and movements have an important role on people’s clothing and style. When we look the periods, we can easily see the changes in clothing. In my opinion, these changes will continue throughout the history of mankind. Maybe, one day, people begin to wear dresses in a very different style from our period and they might see us as strange people.

Second Draft 2- THE DIFFERENCES IN WOMAN LIFE

                          THE DIFFERENCES IN WOMAN LIFE

Like many other countries, Turkey is in the midst of major social change. This social change affected people’s outlook on life. And it caused generational differences. When we compare, it is obvious to see that women in today’s world are different than women in our grandmothers’ time in Turkey in terms of fig, education and social status.

First, we can see the difference easily between our grandmothers’ time and today in woman clothing. Anciently, clothing was shaped according to the needs. Therefore, when a woman bought a dress, they chose what they can use more. In addition to that, they cared to spend as little money as possible they had because economic opportunities weren’t as good as now. On the other hand, clothing is shaped according to pleasures in today’s world. Women are always buying whatever they want and trying to wear trendy clothes. Moreover, some of them can spend large amounts of their money to wear just an outfit for a day.

Second, we can see how much changed education system and female education rates. 30 years ago, Turkey was very bad situation when we compared to now. Thus, not only women but also men had difficulty in getting education. As well as, most families didn’t want to send their girls to school due to the social conditions of the period. However with the development of Turkey, positive changes have occurred in women’s education. There isn’t any girl who doesn’t go to school. In this situation, compulsory education has an important role. According to compulsory education system, everyone have to study to high school.

Finally, we can see the changes in women’s social status. In our grandmothers’ time, perspective on women didn’t allow them to take place in working life. Cooking, raising children, cleaning were things that were expected from them. People behaved as if women couldn’t do important jobs. Today, point of view on women changed. They began working in managerial position. After that, social perception has changed and women started to see more respect.

In conclusion, we can see the differences between our grandmothers’ time and today in terms of clothing, education and social status. I think all these changes were necessary and in a positive direction. And it must continue to do. We should behave women in a positive way because they are very important factor in the development of a country.

               THE CHANGES IN MARRIAGE
Like many other countries, Turkey is in the midst of major social change. This social change has affected people’s outlook on life and marital life. It also led to the cultural change and generational differences. Later, the major changes have been seen in marriages from our grandparents’ time to our time; these are the time of marriage, partner selection, divorce rates.
First, the time of marriage changed. People were starting to work at early ages and there was farming, manpower-intensive occupations in our grandparents’ time. They were making money at early ages and their families were forcing their children to marry. However, in our time, people must complete their education to make money. Therefore, they are old when they marry.
Second, there is a difference in partner selection. Choosing a marriage partner was a family matter in our grandparents’ time. Because of cradle arrangements, their partner was known. Thus, it led to unhappy marriages. But, in our time, choosing a marriage partner is an individual matter. Finally, they select the appropriate person to marry.
Finally, the divorce rates are different. In our grandparents’ time, the divorce rate was less. Because families decided to partner who they married, divorce was a big problem. On the other hand, there is an increase in the divorce rates in our time. Due to the social change, the significance of the marriage decreased. After that, the divorce is seen as a normal event.
In conclusion, there are lots of differences between our grandparents’ time and our time. They cause many changes in marital life and we can see the changes easily when we compare marriage in our grandparents’ time and marriage in our time. In my opinion, these changes will continue throughout the history of mankind. After that, we will see the differences between us and our grandchildren in the near future.
